DR. NANCY SNYDERMAN: Hello, I’m Dr. Nancy Snyderman with this week’s Healthful Hint.

When you have itchy skin, it’s tough to resist the urge to scratch. But often, scratching just makes things worse. Next time, put that urge on hold and try one of these simple home remedies.

A compress soaked in cool water can banish the itch. And some say a milk compress works even better. Old fashioned calamine lotion, especially the kind with menthol or phenol is another soothing solution.

If hay fever or insect bites are to blame, reach for an antihistamine. Antihistamines block the release of natural chemicals that can trigger an itch.

If dry skin seems to be the cause, try a brief bath in lukewarm water doctored with moisturizing oil. To make your own, add 10 drops of scented oil, say rosemary or sandalwood, to a half cup of castor oil. Then just add a teaspoon to the tub each time you bathe.

And if you’re just stuck with a stubborn itch that just won’t go away, see your doctor. It might be a reaction to a medication or a sign of an underlying illness.

With Healthful Hints, I’m Dr. Nancy Snyderman.
